Welcome back to our series on the IKO line of asphalt shingles, where we’re diving into all seven types of IKO shingles. In this edition of the series, our focus turns to the Marathon Plus AR Traditional 3-Tab Shingle line, which has been a homeowner favorite for decades. Engineered with IKO’s precise, computer-controlled technology — that delivers consistent size and shape — these durable asphalt shingles are also affordable.
One of the top shingle companies in the country, IKO is a popular choice among Dane County homeowners — along with GAF and Owens Corning asphalt shingles.
Here’s a quick overview of the entire IKO series:

TRADITIONAL MEETS TERRIFIC
This time-tested, weather-resistant 3-tab shingle is crafted to stand up to the forces of Wisconsin’s weather. In addition, a flexible fiberglass mat (which sits under the shingles) fortifies this roofing system’s weather resistance. The traditional, classic design is flattering to a variety of architectural home styles. Plus, these shingles are made in a metric size larger than many comparable shingles in their class — so they can be installed more efficiently.
Marathon Plus AR is engineered from the ground up to protect your home for the long run. Let’s dive into some of the benefits of the product …
IKO FASTLOCK® SEALANT STRIPS
Shingles should lie flat, and stay in place, on your roof. If wind lifts shingles up, water from ice dams or wind-driven rain can get in-between the shingles and the underlay — which can cause a leaky roof.
IKO shingles are made with FastLock sealant strips along the bottom edges of the shingles. FastLock is an amazing product that is activated by the sun’s heat, making it super tacky.
This creates an excellent bond — ensuring maximum protection against blow-off, wind uplift and water penetration.
BUILT-IN ALGAE RESISTANCE
One of the many ways that IKO stands out from the competition is the fact that they embed copper-coated granules into their Marathon Plus AR shingles.
This helps inhibit growth of blue-green algae, which can cause black stains, streaks and discoloration on a roof.
UV-RESISTANT GRANULES
IKO has created an exclusive, advanced color blending technology that offers some of the most visually appealing color blends on the market in the most popular colors.
COLORS
Speaking of color, Marathon Plus AR 3-tab shingles are currently available in two popular colors that pair well with just about any style/color of home. The fact that they only produce two colors is one of the ways IKO keeps the pricing affordable without sacrificing quality.
A note on color …
Getting the shingle color just right is a big part of any roofing purchase. That said, no matter which asphalt roofing product you ultimately go with, it’s best to request a shingle sample before making any decisions. Computers, phones and tablets may produce color variations, and the last thing you want is for your roof color to look different than you expected.
