In part 6 of our series on IKO asphalt shingles, we’re diving into the Crown Slate line, which is inspired by the luxurious, sought-after look of natural slate tiles. There are a lot of benefits associated with Crown Slate shingles — including imparting outstanding protection for your home — which is why they’re a popular choice among homeowners in the Dane County area.
IKO is one of the top asphalt shingles brands in the country, along with GAF and Owens Corning. They are designed to be installed efficiently, and built to last.
In this article, we’ll take a look at some of the benefits of Crown Slate shingles, plus take a look at color options, too. Before we jump in, here’s a quick overview of our IKO series:

STATELY CHARM THAT’S AS TOUGH AS NAILS
Crown Slate shingles are made to adorn and protect estate homes and homes of distinction.
Some of the features of these asphalt shingles include heavy-duty construction, weight and thickness. In fact, they’re so durable they qualify for a Class 4 Impact Resistance rating, which can entitle some homeowners to a reduction in their homeowner’s insurance premium (check with your insurance agent to see if you qualify).
Let’s dive deeper into even more benefits …
CLASS 4 IMPACT RESISTANCE RATING
As mentioned, the heavy-weight construction, as well as IKO’s own modified asphalt, are shock absorbent — cushioning the impact of hail.
NOTE: This rating is ONLY for the purpose of enabling homeowners to obtain a possible reduction in their homeowner’s insurance premium (if available). Hail is not covered under the IKO limited warranty.
ALGAE RESISTANCE, BUILT RIGHT INTO THE SHINGLE
IKO embeds special algae-resistant granules into their Crown Slate designer asphalt shingles, and this helps inhibit growth of blue-green algae, which can cause streaks, black stains and discoloration.
IKO FASTLOCK® SEALANT STRIPS PROVIDE EXCEPTIONAL BONDING
Shingles should lie flat, and stay in place, on your roof. If wind lifts shingles up, water from ice dams or wind-driven rain can get in-between the shingles and the underlay — which can cause a leaky roof.
IKO shingles are made with FastLock sealant strips along the bottom edges of the shingles. FastLock is an amazing product that is activated by the sun’s heat, making it super tacky.
This creates an excellent bond — ensuring maximum protection against blow-off, wind uplift and water penetration.
TOUGH AS THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL
Crown Slate shingles are crafted with immense strength and durability.
They’re so durable, in part, because of IKO’s resilient fiberglass mat — which is coated on the top and bottom with weathering asphalt, before being surfaced with colored granules.
WISCONSIN WEATHER, NO PROBLEM
An extra coating of weathering asphalt is another component of this shingle’s strength.
IKO’s proprietary modified asphalt provides remarkable flexibility, which helps resist Wisconsin wind, rain, snow, ice — and the heat of summer and cold of winter.
COLORS
Crown Slate shingles blend well with natural surroundings, as well as with more upscale homes — and add immense curb appeal.
A note on color …
Getting the shingle color just right is a big part of any roofing purchase. That said, no matter which asphalt roofing product you ultimately go with, it’s best to request a shingle sample before making any decisions. Computers, phones and tablets may produce color variations, and the last thing you want is for your roof color to look different than you expected.
