In part 5 of our series on IKO asphalt shingles, we’re diving into their designer line. First up is Armourshake asphalt shingles, which are IKO’s “ultimate in design, thickness, heavy weight and generous exposure.” One of the reasons for this is the fact that these shingles include an additional course of IKO Armour starter strips, which improves the already-impressive dimensional thickness of this asphalt shingle (more on starter strips shortly).
IKO is one of the top asphalt shingles brands in the country — along with GAF and Owens Corning. They are designed to be installed efficiently, and built to last.
In this article, we’ll be sharing some of the benefits of the Armourshake shingles, as well as colors and a mini gallery. But first, here’s a quick overview of our IKO series:
- Dynasty Performance Shingles
- Nordic Performance Shingles
- Cambridge Architectural Shingles
- Marathon Plus AR Traditional 3-Tab Shingles
- Armourshake Designer Shingles
- Crown Slate Designer Shingles
- Royal Estate Designer Shingles
PREMIUM PERFORMANCE, EXCELLENT ENDURANCE
A premium product, Armourshake asphalt shingles are as durable as they are beautiful — adding peace of mind and curb appeal to your home.
Some of the benefits of these asphalt shingles include wind protection, the ability to handle water and temperature extremes, and a Class 3 Impact Resistance rating. A Class 4 Impact Resistance rating is also available (only in Shadow Black). An added benefit of these impact resistance ratings is that they may entitle you to a reduction in your homeowner’s insurance premium — so be sure to discuss with your home insurance agent if you choose this product to see if you qualify.
In addition, Armourshake shingles have the highest dimensional thickness, weight and exposure, of all the IKO shingles, making them a true sight to behold.
That said, let’s dive deeper into some of the benefits of these asphalt shingles …
A FIBERGLASS MAT WITH DOUBLE THE PROTECTION
Armourshake shingles are strong from the inside out, in part because of their resilient fiberglass mats, which are a step above other asphalt shingle offerings on the market. Armourshake actually utilizes TWO fiberglass mats (instead of just one), which are laminated together for additional flexibility, strength and durability.
IMPRESSIVE CLASS 3 & CLASS 4 IMPACT RESISTANCE RATINGS*
*Class 4, Shadow Black only
These shingles are crafted with IKO’s tough, heavy-weight, proprietary modified asphalt coating that acts like a shock absorber, cushioning the impact of hail.
Note: This rating is solely for the purpose of enabling residential property owners to obtain a reduction in their residential insurance premium (if available). That said, this is not a guarantee of impact resistance against hail. Damage from hail is not covered under the limited warranty.
ALGAE RESISTANCE, BUILT RIGHT INTO THE SHINGLE
IKO embeds special algae-resistant granules into their Armourshake designer asphalt shingles, and this helps inhibit growth of blue-green algae, which can cause streaks, black stains and discoloration.
IKO FASTLOCK® SEALANT STRIPS
Shingles should lie flat, and stay in place, on your roof. If wind lifts shingles up, water from ice dams or wind-driven rain can get in-between the shingles and the underlay — which can cause a leaky roof.
IKO shingles are made with FastLock sealant strips along the bottom edges of the shingles. FastLock is an amazing product that is activated by the sun’s heat, making it super tacky.
This creates an excellent bond — ensuring maximum protection against blow-off, wind uplift and water penetration.
UV-RESISTANT GRANULES
The sun’s ultraviolet rays have a tendency to cause roof discoloration, which is why Armourshake shingles are made with reflective granules embedded right in their surface — helping to prevent discoloration from occurring.
COLORS
Armourshake’s color offerings are designed to blend well with the aesthetic of your home, as well as the natural surroundings. They also add outstanding curb appeal.
A note on color …
Getting the shingle color just right is a big part of any roofing purchase. That said, no matter which asphalt roofing product you ultimately go with, it’s best to request a shingle sample before making any decisions. Computers, phones and tablets may produce color variations, and the last thing you want is for your roof color to look different than you expected.
