Chances are you haven’t walked around on your roof lately. So, it’s not always easy to know when it’s time to replace your asphalt roofing.
Still, your roof can give you clues if you know what to look for. Here’s our expert advice.
Here are 6 sure signs asphalt roofing needs attention:
1. Roof Age
As your roof ages, the asphalt shingles develop signs of wear and tear. Some of the more common signs you could have a roofing problem are:
- Curling or shrinking shingles
- Shingles are discolored
- Sagging shingles along the ridge or other areas
- You see moss or algae growth
- Shingles lose granules or you see granules in your gutters
If you see any of these signs, your asphalt shingles are aging out and need the attention of a roofing contractor.
2. Peeling or Cracked Paint
There are many causes for peeling, cracking paint inside your home, but one of the main causes is excess moisture. If you see any signs of paint peeling or cracking, it’s a good idea to get a roof inspection.
It’s better to repair the leak than to leave the leak unattended and have to replace the roof!
3. Water Damage
Have you noticed any discoloration on your ceiling or attic? If so, this is a sign of water damage, and that can cause big problems in your home.
Ceiling discoloration could mean that water has penetrated your roof sheathing causing an internal leak. That’s when immediate attention is warranted.
Don’t wait until the water causes mold growth, rot, or even the risk of your roof collapsing. Get it checked out as soon as possible.
4. Big Increase in Your Energy Bill
If your utility bills have sharply increased, it could be that your asphalt shingles have reached the end of their lifespan. When this happens, the shingles absorb heat instead of reflecting it and the cold penetrates the roofing, which can lead to a sharp increase in utility bills.
Get your roof inspected to rule it out as an energy culprit.
5. Damaged, Loose Flashing
Flashing is what roof contractors install to divert water away from certain areas of your roof. Think skylights, chimneys, etc.
Water can easily infiltrate these critical areas causing the flashing to become damaged. If that’s the case with your roof, get it repaired or replaced quickly.
6. Pesky Pests
Wild animals such as birds, mice, rats, squirrels, termites, and even bees like to make your home their home. These creatures can cause unsightly damage, leaving your roof in a constant state of repair, while also possibly causing bigger structural and safety problems.
If that happens, deal with the infestation first, then call a roofing contractor to inspect the damage.
Other Telltale Signs of Roofing Issues
Besides these classic signs of distressed roofing, there are two more.
- Shingles that are cracked,
- And if there are bald spots where the asphalt granules should be.
Both of these issues require immediate attention to protect your home.
